This year, TAP-NY is welcoming five new board members! Learn more about them here – and be sure to make it out to an event this month to meet them!

1) How did you hear about TAP and why did you decide to join the board?

I was involved in the Penn Taiwanese Society while in college and learned of TAP-Philadelphia through friends as I was looking to stay active in the Taiwanese community upon graduation while I was still in Philadelphia. After moving to NYC, I wanted to take on a more active role in the community, as well as to meet new people, and through Ben Watkins (we had served on the Penn Taiwanese Society board together) enthusiastically sharing stories of his experience on TAP board, I was excited to join as well.

2) What do you hope to accomplish in your role? New event ideas?

Plan a diverse set of opportunities for members to engage in the community and give back, including both one-off volunteering events as well as potentially forming a longer-term partnership with a community organization that has a mission that broadly caters to TAP members, support fellow board members in their events and broader goals, and get to know our TAP members (don’t be shy and say hi at our next event)! Still learning about TAP’s previous/current events and brainstorming new ideas, but a potential one is an introduction to mindfulness workshop (perhaps with the Search Inside Yourself Leadership Institute or organizing a visit to Google and seeing how this type of course has impacted employees).

3) What TAP event are you looking forward to?

Night Market – it’s one of my favorite places to visit in Taiwan, and I’ve always wanted to organize a grand scale version of this in the US (we made a decent attempt in college, but TAP-NY’s event is on a different level). I’m also looking forward to getting to know the board and our members better through our social events (board retreat, TAPpy Hours, etc.).

4) What would our entire membership be most surprised, or interested, to learn about you?

I once worked on a seaweed farm (and loved it!).

1) How did you hear about TAP and why did you decide to join the board?

I first heard about TAP when I moved to NYC a few years years ago.

It’s clear to me that the board is packed with good people who care about the Taiwanese community and about each other. I decided to join because I also want to contribute to the community while being surrounded by motivated people I can learn from and grow with.

2) What do you hope to accomplish in your role? New event ideas?

I hope to be a well-rounded membership chair. By that I mean that I’d like to balance the operational and quantitative needs of the board with the qualitative, people-oriented needs of TAP members.

As far as new events, I’d like to host gatherings that cater to new New Yorkers and provide an avenue for them to find “their people”. I also selfishly want to host events around happenings in the city that I’m interested in going to myself. ;D

3) What TAP event are you looking forward to?

At this point I’m very much looking forward to the TACL national convention. I think it’ll be a valuable opportunity to learn about the identity and guts of the organization as I’m delving into the duties specific to my role.

4) What would our entire membership be most surprised, or interested, to learn about you?

I once got second place in a pie eating contest.

1) How did you hear about TAP and why did you decide to join the board?

I met Alex Shih while we were planning an event together for another organization. I’ve been wanting to be part of a social, community-driven organization for a while, so when the board opportunity came up I was excited to apply. I’d attended both the Gala and the Olympics over Labor Day weekend 2015 and really enjoyed both!

2) What do you hope to accomplish in your role? New event ideas?

I’d like to help optimize the expenses tracking and analysis process, and I would love to attend more TAP events and support other team members.

I think group gym classes like kickboxing or spin could be fun/popular, especially if we can support a charity, and separately volunteering for a charity like Citymeals-on-Wheels could be a good event too. In the summer rooftop events tend to draw interest, and if it’s allowed at someone’s apartment building we could do a beer pong tournament or a bring your own inflatable pool party. I know Apex already does a casino night but we could do something on a smaller scale like a poker night (and it doesn’t have to be for money – we could do fun/funny prizes instead). Food tours are always fun and I’m sure people would enjoy something like that through Chinatown (TAP might already host something similar). I wonder if we could find a Chinese tutor and host weekly language classes because I’m sure some ABCs would love to improve their Mandarin (I would). We could also try to rent a house in the summer for a Hamptons weekend or in the fall for a foliage/hiking weekend – who doesn’t love drinking in a pool or hot tub!

3) What TAP event are you looking forward to?

I’m looking forward to the Lunar New Year Banquet – it’ll be my first event as a board member and I’m excited to get 2016 off to a good start.

4) What would our entire membership be most surprised, or interested, to learn about you?

The coolest celebrity I’ve ever met is Michael Strahan – he was the third wheel on a dinner date right after he won the Super Bowl with the NY Giants, and then we partied together at Marquee!

1) How did you hear about TAP and why did you decide to join the board?

I heard about TAP while I was in graduate school in Chicago, and attended a number of their events. After I moved to New York, I wanted to continue getting involved. My second and third TAP events were the Boat Party and TAPpy Hour at Circle on Labor Day Weekend. During both events, I made so many incredible friends that I knew I wanted to take my involvement to the next level.

2) What do you hope to accomplish in your role? New event ideas?

I’m looking to provide the TAP community with a window into the professional world, whether through workshops, panels, or company tours.

3) What TAP event are you looking forward to?

I’m definitely looking forward to seeing Far East Movement at the Lunar New Year Concert and the Lunar New Year Banquet. On top of that, Jess and I are hosting a dinner later this month, so I hope I can see you there!

4) What would our entire membership be most surprised, or interested, to learn about you?

I have a pretty cheeky iOS app in the app store called Yolotrip. It started out as a project in graduate school, and presents a Tinder-inspired interface for nearby restaurants. Feel free to give it a try here: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/yolotrip/id981720358?mt=8

1) How did you hear about TAP and why did you decide to join the board?

TACL Internship program (shout out to mentor Yvonne). Meet people who hold similar interests (I have so many, we must have one in common) and create unforgettable experiences together (bikepack Iceland, anyone?).

2) What do you hope to accomplish in your role? New event ideas?

Maximize NYC’s best options for social events. Advanced Placement TAPpy hour: scavenger bar hunt for signature cocktails (?)

3) What TAP event are you looking forward to?

LNY Concert with Far East Movement (so we can rock like a G6).

4) What would our entire membership be most surprised, or interested, to learn about you?

I’m really into mushy cereal. Yes, I know the business is in decline. Yes, it makes me sad (life is going to be so hard without Cocoa Puffs).
