It may have been raining all week, but believe it or not, summer in New York City is almost upon us. Whether this is your first summer in New York City (welcome!) or you’re born and raised in the Big Apple, there are plenty of fun summer outdoor activities to do for everyone. We’ve compiled a list of our top 10 things to do in New York City this summer… take a read for some easter eggs about TAP events past and present, and get ready to enjoy all that our great city has to offer!
1) Symphony in the Park – Wednesday, June 17th
Grab a picnic blanket and some snacks and sit back, relax and enjoy a free concert by the New York Philharmonic on the Great Lawn of Central Park. Remember when TAP brought a group to this event in the summer of 2013? Check out pics here and head here for more details.
2) Jazz Age Lawn Party – Weekend of June 13th & 14th, and Weekend of August 15th & 16th
Miss the Gatsby days of the 1920s glitz and lore? Dress up in your favorite swinger dress and head over to Governors Island for an afternoon of dancing, jazz music, and drinks with a 1920s flare! More details here.
3) Free Kayaking Along the Hudson River – All Weekends
Cool down with a kayak and a friend – free kayaks are available throughout the entire summer for you to paddle the Hudson. We promise the river isn’t that dirty…after all, we brought a group to clean up a part of the river for our Riverkeeper Sweep event last month. For more details, head here. And if you love aquatics, get in on our whale watching event this month!
Take me out to the ball game! It’s baseball season, and with two NYC teams to root for, it’s the perfect time of year to head out to the park for intense innings, snacks, and a ton of fun. Who knows – maybe TAP will be putting together a trip to see the Mets at Citi Field soon…
5) Yoga at Bryant Park – Tuesdays and Thursdays through September 24th
A BYOM (bring your own mat) affair right in the middle of the city. Join hundreds of other yogis and practice your downward dog while sweating in the early evening sun. The real challenge isn’t the poses, it’s allowing yourself to relax and ignore bystanders checking out the spectacle. More details here. Fun fact: TAP-NY Secretary Audrey Lee is a certified yogi… say hi to her at one of our upcoming events!
6) Pour at the Core – Hard Cider Festival Brooklyn – Saturday June 13th
Cider enthusiasts unite in the city’s hippest borough to try ciders from all over the world. Crisp and refreshing, more details here.
7) Coney Island – All Summer Long
Whether you want to tan on the beach, go for a dip in the ocean, or just people watch, there’s something for everyone. Also, don’t forget to check out Luna Park, which will be celebrating its 5th anniversary this summer, and Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Content on the 4th of July. It’s a ton of fun… remember when TAP took a trip to the beach last summer for an amazing afternoon of volleyball, hot dogs, and more?
8) Shakespeare in the Park – Select Dates
This beloved summer tradition has drawn over five million visitors to the Delacorte Theater in Central Park for an evening of Shakespearean comedy, drama and tragedy. This year’s lineup: The Tempest (through July 5th) and Cymbeline (July 23rd – Aug 23rd). Get in on it here.
9) Warm Up @ PS1 MoMA – Saturdays, June 27th – September 5th
The best day rage, day party, and excuse for day drinking that happens every Saturday. Listen to rising stars and old favorites in the electronic/house scene and also get a chance to check out the cool exhibits at the museum. Not your type of place if you don’t like to get sweaty, listen to good music, and have fun in the sun!
One of the best parties in the city during the summer… in addition to TAP’s annual summer boat cruise of course. Check out pics from last year here!
10) US Open – August 31st to September 13th
And last but not least, say good-bye to summer at the US Open. Make sure to buy your tickets early to make sure you’re not left out of the courts. Love racket sports? Keep your eyes “open” for a TAP tournament coming up soon…
