Each month, TAP will be profiling one of our amazing members! This month’s member of the month is John Tsuei!
1. Tell us about yourself! It can be about anything – where you grew up, your professional background, your hobbies, etc.
I spent my childhood growing up between New York and Taiwan (not TAS though!). After going to college in California, I spent the next few years abroad in Japan and China doing research and working. I had the good fortune of making a few connections and ended up working in sports, a dream come true. After a stint with the MLB, I am currently working with the NBA here in NY. It has been nice to return to NYC after many years but I have to say that the city as an adult is very different compared to what I experienced as a kid. Can’t complain though, as I been able to expand my horizons and network in my short time here. TAP has definitely helped me increase my network and make my time in NYC much better.
2. Why did you join TAP? What are your favorite events?
When I first moved back to New York less than two years ago I didn’t know many people here. I figured that TAP was a good way to meet others with a similar cultural background and I ended up meeting a ton of great people. It was a big step for me to go to my first TAP event when I didn’t know anyone there but I am thankful that I did because it started a chain reaction in which I was able to meet more and more interesting people and participate in numerous fun events. Honestly, there are a ton of TAP events that I really enjoy…TAP Olympics, Taiwanese Trivia Night, the snowboarding trip, TAP sports teams… but my favorite recent event will probably be the TAP Amazing Race/Scavenger Hunt. It was thrilling to race around the city with amazing teammates and just narrowly miss out on victory.
3. Tell us something cool that happened to you this past year.
The coolest thing that happened this past year was no doubt meeting some incredible people and developing some amazing relationships. On a more tangible note, it was also pretty cool to be able to work on the NBA All-Star Game in New Orleans and have a front row seat for all of the festivities. Speaking of which, the NBA All-Star Game is in New York this year! If you have the time, be sure to soak in the experience!
4. If we wanted to hang out, where would we find you?
I tend to be found either playing sports (soccer, basketball, or pretty much anything active), eating (especially desserts and bubble tea!), or just chilling at home catching up on TV shows or reading a book. While my obsession for bubble tea may not reach the levels of certain TAP (board) members, I can very easily be lured into any CoCo or Kung Fu Tea establishment in the city…
5. What’s your advice for any newer members who want to get more involved?
Pick an event that you are interested in and take the time to talk to the people there. You will quickly find that there will be others who share similar interests and it is also a great way to get to know more board members. Ultimately, I found that my TAP experience became a lot more fruitful when I decided to volunteer. It can start off with helping out at events, participating in one of the community service opportunities, or even joining a committee to help plan future events or projects. I was able to develop deeper relationships with fellow members and feel like I was contributing a bit to the greater community.
