Doing Good Never Felt So Good
By Betty Wang, TAP-NY Community Chair
In the fast paced crazy city that New York is, doing good is something that often goes overlooked.
As the holidays approach, I wanted to use this opportunity to look back at TAP’s community service efforts this year – how we have grown, who we have partnered with, where we have innovated, and what our members have gotten out of it.
In February, we canvassed the streets with Don’t Walk By, offering homeless individuals a hot meal and daily necessities. During the summer, TAP-NY raised nearly $4000 for the American Cancer Society, and earned Relay For Life Silver Team status. As fall approached, our thoughts returned to the many New Yorkers who are without food or shelter every day, and we participated in a number soup kitchen and meal delivery events, helping to make sure nobody goes to bed hungry.
Our efforts are by no means only for adults. In fact, working with children has always been a personal passion, and TAP members have had the opportunity to participate in a number of activities targeted at creating fulfilling and fun experiences for the youth of New York. In collaboration with the Global Language Project, we brought cultural activities, such as calligraphy and Chinese yo-yo to underprivileged children who otherwise wouldn’t have had such experiences. During New York Cares Day this past October, we repainted and revitalized a New York City public school to bring liveliness and cheer to hundreds of school children.
Volunteering brings you a plethora of benefits. People who volunteer are happier, more content, and experience a greater sense of satisfaction. Volunteering promotes a sense of gratitude and is a great way for you to get out there and meet like-minded individuals and share in a fun activity.
For the month of December, TAP will be giving you the chance to spread holiday cheer to children and teens who are in need of a little something to brighten their holidays. At our December TAPpy hour, we will be collecting a modest fee that will be put towards a fulfilling gift of your choice for one of our sponsored children through the New York Cares Winter Wishes campaign and the Foster Parent Advocacy Foundation.
I hope to see you at our December TAPpy Hour (watch Facebook for an invite), and no matter what you decide to do or how you decide to spend your time, money or energy, I encourage you to get off your feet and volunteer or donate to something you believe in!
